LONG ISLANDER ASKED TO HELP SET VOTING MACHINE
STANDARDS
HAUPPAUGE,
NY (Aug. 5) - A Long Island engineering executive has been asked
to join a task force that will set new national standards for voting
equipment.
As a result of the serious problems in tallying votes in last year's
Presidential election, the 360,000-member Institute of Electrical
and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) has created a high-level group that
will provide technical specifications for electronic, mechanical
and human factors that can be used by manufacturers of voting machines
or by those purchasing such machines. The project is being developed
in close communication with the Federal Election Commission (FEC)
as well as the National Association of State Election Directors,
the National Institute of Science and Technology and the U.S. Transportation
and Architectural Barriers Compliance Board.
This IEEE task force asked Alfred DuPlessis to head a five-person
panel that will help assure the highest possible standards of reliability
for these machines. Mr. DuPlessis, 41, is the Principal Engineering
Director for The Omnicon Group, a Hauppauge engineering firm whose
specialties include reliability, maintainability and safety engineering.
Omnicon is one of only a handful of companies in the United States
with credentials in this discipline.
In addition to reliability, the IEEE task force will set standards
for future voting machines' accessibility, confidentiality, security
and accuracy.
"The unfortunate events surrounding the last Presidential election
make it imperative that sweeping changes be made in the design,
construction and operation of voting machines," DuPlessis said.
"We hope our efforts can help pave the way for such changes
and that the problems of last November never occur again."
The Omnicon Group has won a number of awards in recent years, including
Deloitte & Touche's "Long Island Fast 50 Award" for
the past two years, and the Hauppauge Industrial Association Business
Achievement Award. Additionally, last year the IEEE named company
founder and president Scott Abrams "Reliability Engineer of
the Year".
